Turkana Traditional Chair

Turkana Traditional Chair From Turkana Community in the North Western region of Kenya. They  are nomadic pastoralists in North Western Kenya. Their culture is still dominant and every man in the community is required to have a wooden chair which they carry with them. It is used as a seat and as a pillow whenever they sleep.

The community is part of the Nilotic tribes and constitutes the second largest pastoralist community in Kenya after the Maasai.  They originally came from the Karamajong region in North Eastern Uganda. It is believed that they settled there while persuing an unruly bull.

They occupy an arid land with often high temperatures and a very hot sun and thus the reason they were less affected by the colonialism unlike other tribes because the British saw little value in their land.
